For most landscapers, the unique beauty and spirit of something made by hand, constructed, and shaped, emphasizes the joy of creating. And even if it means having a small garden to work with, every landscaper knows the value of enjoying their craft and mastering their skills.

Having a small garden to work on does not necessarily mean less details and minor work. What should matter most is to closely assess each detail to come up with the best result.

Working on a small garden is never a problem to most landscape designers. Whether the area is large or small, the sales continue to have a gradual annual growth increase of 8% for the last five years.

In addition, from 1997 to 2002 alone, landscaping sales achieved a growth rate of almost $40 billion. This shows that the landscape designers know how to hone their craft well, regardless of the size of the area they work on.

Generally, when people describe small gardens, they refer to those areas that have straight walls, borders, lines, and/or walks. Then a problem is created because small gardens tend to create an impression of being dull, rigid, and boring. The goal of landscaping should delve into how to make the garden look alive, larger, and more appealing.

The Main Concept

The very core of landscaping a small garden is based on how a landscaper can make the most of the size of the area through plant selection.

With a small garden, having the right kind and size of plants is crucial to the outcome of the whole project.

Size is an important factor because the size of the plants that will be used in the garden should project an image of a bigger space, even if the area is quite small. The color, shape, and texture of the plantings should be coordinated.

It is best to use curves to create a visible flow to the design. Since small gardens tend to have rigid, straight lines, it is best to have curves to open up the garden to reveal its natural beauty. It is also important to create illusions that will give a small garden an effect of being larger.

Considering these, landscaping a small garden will never be a daunting task. As they say, it is all in the details. So whether it is a small or a large garden, landscape designers always take note of the details in the design.

Dr. William Howard Hay introduced food combining in 1911. After 16 yrs medical practice his own health began to deteriorate, and he developed high blood pressure, Brights disease (now more commonly known as acute or chronic nephritis, a kidney disease) and a dilated heart. There being no treatment available for dilated heart at the time, Dr. Hay was inspired to treat his own symptoms. His basic premise is that there is one underlying cause for health problems and that is the wrong chemical condition in the body.

He did this by eating ‘fundamentally’ as he called it; taking foods in a natural form and not mixing proteins and starches at the same meal. The wrong chemical condition is acidity which is caused by the manufacture and accumulation of acid from the products of digestion and metabolism in amounts greater than the body can eliminate.

Along with dietary changes, Dr. Hay also advised fresh air, exercise and general lifestyle changes. The basic rules of this diet are: starches and sugar should not be eaten with proteins and acid fruits at the same meal; vegetables, salads and fruits should play a major part in the diet; proteins, starches and fats should be eaten in small quantities and only wholegrain unprocessed starches should be used; and finally at least 4 hours should elapse between meals of different food groups. It is also known as the “food combining” diet. Acid foods are protein rich, meat, fish, dairy, etc., and alkaline the carbohydrate-rich starch foods like rice, grains and potatoes.

Following the simple rules of the Hay Diet can reverse chronic and degenerative conditions such as constipation, indigestion and arthritis. It can be beneficial to asthma and allergy sufferers. It can also stimulate natural weight loss, thus reducing the health risks linked to obesity, such as diabetes, gallstones and coronary heart disease.

Some Backyard Landscaping Tips
By Jasmine Stone

Backyard landscaping is not just positioning plants in your backyard. Consider it as an art, a masterpiece that shows your creativity and personality. There are three elements in landscaping your backyard: structure, area and texture of your plants.

Structure refers to the form of the plant and the arrangement of the branches. Plants, such as trees, come in different shapes. This ranges from the hanging form of the white bark willow, to the stiff form of the Lombardy poplar trees.

The second element of backyard landscaping is the area. This refers to the visual flow and the arrangement of plants in the backyard. The movement of the eyes is affected by different grouping of the plants.

Texture is also an important component of backyard landscaping. The texture of the plant refers to appearance of the plant as it is perceived with the other plants surrounding it. A good example is the texture of marigolds can be distinguished as rough or smooth when grouped with other plants.

Knowing that we have defined the elements of backyard landscaping, you can now begin putting this knowledge to use. Below are more tips on how you can landscape your backyard.

Planning

Make a list of the needed materials and tools to redesign your backyard. Most importantly, you need to list the plants that you wish to place in the area. Do not forget to include a list plants that you can substitute in case your preferred plants are not obtainable.

Organize a schedule for the construction process and outline the process according to priority. Creating a schedule helps you estimate the time the landscaping process will consume. Most landscaping projects can be done in a week or two.

Selecting the Plants

Apply what you have learned about the elements of backyard landscaping that were mentioned earlier. There are many kinds of plants that work well in a group. The pattern of the plants should create a 3D effect and should look well from all perspectives.

Remember to be creative. You can use themes on your backyard. These may involve a country, romantic or tropical theme or others.

Make it work… the Construction Process

Prepare the soil where you will plant your selected plants. One method you can use is by creating an elevated bed. You can pile soil or use rocks to do this. Creating an elevated bed also helps you solve the problem of losing excess water when irrigating the plants.

Generally, the best period to plant foliage or trees is during the months of October and November. Plants can develop sturdy roots during the winter season prior to development of other parts during the spring.

Juice can actually be considered a natural water source and provides the body with protein, carbohydrates, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that can be absorbed quickly and efficiently. Fresh juice also contains necessary enzymes, and pigments such as carotenes, chlorophyll, and flavonoids.

Juicing fresh fruits and vegetables provides numerous nutritional advantages that are extremely important to weight loss. In addition, diets containing a high percentage of uncooked foods are significantly associated with weight loss, improved blood sugar control, and lower blood pressure.

Your appetite finds a raw foods diet more filling. Cooking can cause the loss of up to 97% of water-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Since uncooked foods such as juices contain more vitamins and other nutrients, they are more satisfying to the body, so it does not feel starved for nutrients. This means the metabolism will keep running efficiently and keep your weight loss efforts headed in the right direction

Juicing kick-starts your body’s digestive process and enables quick absorption of high-quality nutrition, which can result in increased energy. This is one of the great advantages of achieving weight loss through improved nutrition. Fresh juices, combined with a well-balanced diet will provide you with the energy needed to burn more calories, fat, and provide you with the fuel you need for physical activity.

However, juicing does remove the fiber from these nutrient-dense foods. So be sure to include an appropriate amount of fiber-rich foods in your daily diet. Juicing should be a complement to a well-balanced healthy diet, not a substitute.

So with a little planning and creativity, juicing could enhance your well-balanced diet and add some zest. The internet is a great resource for juicing recipes and information, and with the realization that raw foods and juicing is a great health boost, books and magazine articles are touting the benefits and offering recipe ideas.

Watching Charlie Dimmock swing her garden tools around on my TV screen is one way to achieve inspiration for getting out in the garden and actually tidying the place up. Yes, the Groundforce team, with good ole salty dog Alan Titmarsh advising just where I should stick my Buddleia for best effect is a veritable tableau of gardening knowledge that would rival the creation of the Garden of Eden. Well, maybe that is taking it a little too far; the garden designed by the omnipotent overseer would probably ditch the decking and go for silver lined clouds with rainbow struts.

Jesting about the religious influence on my back yard aside, gardening shows are a wonderful place to pick up new ideas for re-landscaping. However, a bit like tribal tattoos, some of the more aesthetic gardening tips involving landscaping can become outdated and dare I say, a little bit common. For example, back in the nineteen eighties, crazy paving was all the rage. Now there are incalculable numbers of pathways, driveways and patio areas of concrete trip hazards and an uncontrollable weed problem thanks to this landscape design trend.

A later, but equally atrocious trend was for decking. Yes, the aforementioned Groundforce programme may have well been known as Deckforce due to the fact that every owner of every garden featured on the show asked for the ultra slippery death platforms to be installed amongst the herbaceous borders! Poor Alan was often left twiddling his thumbs as the owners snubbed the idea of any plants, generally to avoid maintenance, anmd basically wanted the wjhole area paved and decked over to provide a place to drink beer and eat half cooked sausages of a damp bank holiday weekend.

It is actually the very nature of Britain’s climate that has lead to gardening becoming a hard landscaping and house extension business. In my opinion, and which is generally the advice I give, is to save your money by not flooding the garden with concrete and half the Amazon Rainforest. All you need is a bit of shelter. This will keep the sun from scorching your skin (yes, the chance would be a fine thing I know) and the rain from puddling your pathways. Simply by providing a barrier of sorts from the elements, you will have halted the flight of a whole flock of proverbial birds with a single sling of the shot.

Garden shades come in all shapes and forms, and as their appearance on a prime time green-fingered show has been low, are unlikely to ever become a aesthetic faux pas. Traditionally, the good ole tree was the way that gardens achieved their shade, but with the prolific rate of new builds in the country, sometimes it can be 20 years before a sapling provides enough shade for an afternoon Pimms and lemonade.

Gazebo’s and marquees often make an appearance, but the way these are generally of a fixed nature means that the space of a garden is not taken advantage of. The suggestion I am inclined to make to anyone in this situation is to invest in a garden shade of a more temporary nature. Sail shades for example can be erected quickly and effortlessly and are suitable for any size garden. They also have the benefit of being used as a feature through creative positioning. It is something that Charlie and Alan are likely to keep to themselves, a top tip too hot to share as it were. So hot in fact, that it calls for a small siesta after a sun soaked sangria. Well, we can dream can’t we!

The truth is that you can easily learn enough to be growing useful crops very quickly, and each session spent in your garden teaches you even more. You will learn much that is unique to your own situation, such as local soil conditions, your particular aspect in relation to the sun, and oddities that relate to your local microclimate. You will learn most of this by getting out and giving it a go.

The taste of home grown vegetables is vastly superior to that of the commercially grown produce. Have you heard people complain that tomatoes no longer have any taste? They will have when you grow your own - you will never taste better. The lack of taste with the commercial crop is not all the fault of the growers, as they are under pressure to produce a crop, of uniform size and colour, to the schedule of the wholesale market, and ultimately the supermarket. You set your own schedule.

The freshness of your own crop is a big plus. Vegetables I have bought from the supermarket, and stored in the refrigerator, have started to become inedible after a few days. I have had home grown produce still fresh in the refrigerator after 2 weeks!

Typically, your home garden will produce a generous yield, and can readily help pay for the cost of growing them. You can effectively end up having free vegetables. Summer, especially, is usually a time of abundance, even glut, as family and friends leave your place with perhaps more produce than they had expected to see. A tip - when giving away fresh produce, try to limit your generosity - it is better to give a small amount to many rather than to give to the few more than they can actually use.

One of the turn-offs to trying something you have not done before is the intimidating flood of information (and misinformation) you will receive. If you are browsing one of the major bookstores, you may find hundreds of books on the topic - which do you buy? To begin with, look for the simple, basic information. Do not bother with those full of jargon - you will learn the technical terms as you go.

You will hear folklore from the family, such as “Uncle Henry always put … (you name it) … on his … (name it again)”. Folklore is part of our heritage, but there is no guarantee of its usefulness. You will hear from the office genius, who has done nothing, but still knows all the answers - nod wisely, and then ignore him.

Plants evolved millions of years before humans, and they actually want to grow. It has been said that in many cases plants grow despite what we do to help them. If you provide the basics, and these are reasonable nutrition and regular watering, Mother Nature does the rest - let her work for you.

These days a stroll through the Zilker Botanical Gardens could lead to an encounter with a small herd of Bambiraptors, dinosaurs with feathered wings similar to a turkey. The word “raptor” means thief and these little creatures, named after the Disney character, were known to steal the babies of other dinosaurs. The usually sedate gardens are full of all kinds of life-size dinosaurs, like the ferocious cousin to T- Rex, a Daspletosaur, standing at 33 feet tall. The 30 creatures from the DinoLand traveling exhibit will continue to have a temporary residence among the flora and fauna of the Botanical Gardens until November 30, 2008.

The scientifically-accurate exhibit, created by Lost World Studio founder Guy Darrough, is a terrific reason to visit one of Austin’s great outdoor venues. The Zilker Botanical Gardens is a non-profit organization established in 1955, with the gardens making a home in Zilker Park since 1962.

It takes an average of eight months for one of the dinosaurs to be created out of wire, foam and wood frames covered with clay, silicone rubber, plastic and fiberglass. The result is an incredibly life-like creature, further enhanced by the outdoor display of plants, nests with eggs and large bones scattered about the exhibits. Little ones can stand in awe of the 30 feet tall Kritosaurus, a gentle plant-eating giant whose name means “Noble Lizard.”

As visitors wander from one period of the Mesozoic Era to the next, they will also come across small wooden dinosaurs decorated by local elementary schools. There is the Hip-Hoposaurus complete with gold chain and sunglasses. These clever colorful creatures are a big hit with small children, as they are just their size and close to the trail.

Another attraction is the Zoo of Ferns, representing some of the more than 12,000 species of ferns that exist today. The origins of the fern can be traced back 450 million years, making it a perfect prehistoric companion to the DinoLand exhibit. Put together by members of the Garden Club of Austin known as the Fern Team, this exhibit gives kids an eye-level introduction into the world of ferns.

After seeing all the dinosaurs, visitors should take the time to explore the rest of the gardens, such as the Mabel Davis Rose Garden, Isamu Taniguchil Japanese Garden or the take a walk along the Butterfly Trail. It’s worth a visit to the Chrysalis Gift Shop for all things dinosaur. The admission to the DinoLand exhibit is $5 for adults and $3 for children (3-13).

Their site has information on Austin real estate along with providing a map search of the Austin MLS and stats on current mortgage interest rates.
Go shopping with a list and don’t go to the grocery store hungry. Make sure this shopping trip you can resist those Oreos and potato chips.

Clean out your refrigerator and your cabinets. Throw out the half-empty bags of snack foods. Put any microwaveable foods in a dark bag and stash them somewhere in the back of the freezer. Out of sight, out of mind.

Make eating this way fun. Invest in those big, white square dishes that are good for serving sushi. It’s easier to arrange small portions of different foods that way. And getting new white dishes will be symbolic of this new, purer way of eating. Get some good chopsticks so you can take your time eating. This is really fun!

For most of us our patch is our shelter. The open azure sky and hide shapes, smells and ensign are essential.

Nevertheless when it comes to plot furniture, many people pick their plot furniture lacking thinking about how the furniture’s flag interact with the environment they will be sited in. High-value backyard furniture can sometimes be found in a strain of flag, or you can paint your furniture yourself. My customers regularly ask me how to integrate lurid furniture into their backyard or landscape. They want to understand affect combinations, how to use furniture as a blush accent, how to draw your eye with influence, or how to craft a placid place with affect. It’s a part of my thing I very enjoy.

Consider these possibilities for using shade with your patch furniture:

Contrasting ensign: When a backyard fabricate calls for lurid incline I notify contrasting insignia such as wretched or purple near yellows; or carroty or carroty-red against emerald or jade greens. Even black furniture (say against a hedge of golden forsythia) can produce a dynamic differ. Imagine the collision of periwinkle navy Adirondack chairs against a backdrop bed of positive golden daylilies.

Harmonious insignia: If you don’t want to challenge the eye or you want a plot legroom to look superior, wish your backyard furniture in flag that reach their surroundings. Solid wood furniture with a buttery coat of paint will make every creep of the patch feel sumptuous. A lively lime green in dimness, shaded point adds light and a vivacious value.

Furniture that matches a patch accent: Think about what you want to highlight. A consumer in New England located an upbeat tangerine plot bench alongside her koi pool. In this basis, the vivid bench matched her preferred plot accent, her orange fish.

Serene ensign: A patron in the peaceful Northwest selected adirondack oversee painted in sallow, for her moon patch that was planted with all pallid plants. She tells me she lounges in her lead, listening to the night noises under the satisfied moon, her white flowers glowing in the moonlight.

Color can earn your house and plot together: An unusual sample of furniture on a front deck can bout your shutters and tie ensign in your house to flag in your landscape. Trying matching your house’s natty blush to bestow an unified, coordinated look, or desire a contrasting affect to add interesting. One client in the Boston fringes located her two seat bench in a pale Daffodil yellow to compliment her slate downcast porch. With mechanism flowers it was a pleasing light blush; in the Fall it set off chrysanthemums and traditional gourds.

Colorful furniture with an objective: If there’s plenty of shade in your yard, chose a lurid incline - flag in shade look great. If you want to draw your eye across the landscape chose a bold punctuation blush. If there is dominant tint in the plot or house, chose an affect that whichever complements or contrasts. For best fallout, keep the flush sketch in the garden austere by sticking to one, two or three ensign. Avoid a shotgun loom with one shade here and one influence there. A simple design that takes your house paint into account gives a planned, unified look to the garden and your home.

Colors for all the seasons: If you don’t have a green thumb and you have a hard time producing harmonious blush in your garden, quaint furniture may be the answer. And think about coldness too. After the May flower have conceded and the vibrant flag have vanished, a well placed example of vivid furniture can decode up the steady diet of cloudy and add a bit of brightness to the landscape.

How do I make up my mind? Many gardeners can have a hard time deciding right flush, given the mass of choices and combinations offered. Check to see if your furniture manufacturer can give you cinema of the significance you are purchasing in some different colors, or use paint swatches, and carry them with you to the garden to see how they game or diverge the actual colors there.

There are many books vacant today providing superb guidance on color in the garden. Concepts that concern to juxtapose conceal colors often make intuit when considering the use of color in furnishing your outdoor place. Given the joys of gardening and all the hard work concerned, I always endorse you top off your labors with handsomely crafted, tough stiff furniture in a color that rewards your aspect, let only the tanned dirt under your nails.

Stop Growing Small Fruits
By Joey Simmons

The one thing that usually shocks new tree growers is the fact that the fruits produced by their tree are much smaller than the ones they’re used to seeing at the grocery store. “What is wrong with my tree?!”, “My God! What have I done!?” are some cried you may hear from the disgruntled tree grower. However, small fruits are a natural occurrence. But while smaller fruits might be what nature originally intended, it is possible to attain larger fruits without any genetic altering or added chemicals. It is only through advanced techniques that the professionals reach such large sizes with their fruits.

Usually in the early stages of a fruit trees growing, veterans do something called “fruit thinning”. The theory behind this process is that with less fruits to pay attention to, the tree will be able to more efficiently send cells to the leftover fruits. When there are hundreds of little fruits on one tree, competing for the available materials necessary for growth, you will most likely just end up with a bunch of stunted fruits. To take care of this problem, simply pluck a third of the fruits extremely early on in the process. You should notice larger fruits that season.

On almost any tree, the success of each individual fruit depends on the spacing. Usually there should not be any fruits within six to eight inches of each other. During the fruit thinning process, this is the distance you should generally aim for to optimize the amount of nutrition that each fruit gets. Any closer and you’ll find they are crowding each other out. Usually this is the first mistake that a new tree grower makes. Having tons of fruit starting to grow is not always a good thing!

Sometimes small fruits are caused by conditions out of the gardener’s control. During the process of cell division that all new fruits go through, cool weather can be fatal to the largeness of your fruits. Likewise, if the weather is particularly cloudy very early in the season, then fewer carbohydrates will be available to your plants. Occasionally, if the factors are all against the well being of your fruit tree, then the fruits will drop to the ground before they are even ripe. A lack of water or certain nutrients, or excessive pests and diseases can also damage the growth of fruits. If you notice these things going on early in the season, you should do more fruit thinning than normal. Sometimes as much as three fourths of the fruits should come off, to allow full nutrition to those who remain.

The best way to find out how to gain larger fruit sizes is to experiment. If your tree has been around for a while, there is almost nothing you can do to it to cause it to die or stop producing fruit. Just test different thinning techniques or anything you can think of to make the fruits larger. You might even head down to your local nursery and enquire about what they would suggest. They will be able to give you advice based on your region and specific tree, which is better than anything I could tell you. So don’t settle with small fruits. Go out there and find out what exactly you need to do to improve the size.

You know the best place to start changing your life and your diet? It’s at the grocery store, of course. Even if you’re at a good weight and pretty healthy, take a tip from dieters.

Do stock up on dried fruits and nuts for snacking. Transform your kitchen from a processed food haven to a healthy kitchen. Invest in a good juicer. Clean out those crisper drawers to get them ready for an influx of new organic and raw foods.

Load up on fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. If you can’t give up meat and fish, consider getting super fresh tuna that you can just sear and serve with sesame seeds and a small amount of soy sauce. (I’m getting hungry just thinking about this!)

Make eating this way fun. Invest in those big, white square dishes that are good for serving sushi. It’s easier to arrange small portions of different foods that way. And getting new white dishes will be symbolic of this new, purer way of eating. Get some good chopsticks so you can take your time eating. This is really fun!

Go to a bookstore and get a cookbook or a food book so you can learn about eating raw foods. Buy a big vase and a bunch of sunflowers to symbolize letting the sun into your diet.

Eating raw foods is a way to give your body some of the nutrition it desperately needs. Many of us are at least slightly overweight, and even the morbidly obese are starving for essential proteins and amino acids. All the processed, cooked foods we eat give us only a small percentage of what we need. Consequently, we eat and eat and yet we’re still not nourished. Psychologists try to tell us we’re eating to make up for an emptiness in our souls. Wrong! Our bodies our empty and trying to tell us so.

Eating raw foods is good for us on so many levels. It’s satisfying to eat them. They take more time to chew and swallow, so we don’t eat as fast. And we’re getting so much more in the way of nutrition by consuming fruits, vegetables, nuts and sprouts.

It can take time to prepare raw foods, however. Which is why a juicer is an important addition to your kitchen once your start to be serious about raw foods. A good juicer can process an entire apple - seeds, stems, peel, pulp and all - and turn all that into a healthy, nutritious juice.

Buying apple juice is NOT the same thing!!! Don’t even look at apple juices or even ciders in the grocery store. Put that $2 or $3 aside and save up for a juicer. Buy bags of apples, orange, bananas, carrots and make your own juices to get everything from the fruit that you’d get by eating it raw. Now you’re getting juice that’s as fresh as the fruit or vegetable you made it from. No preservatives, no processing that strips most of the energy from the fruit. And think of all the delicious combinations you can make with the many tropical fruits that are available now in most grocery stores. You can customize your fruits and add non-typical ingredients like pumpkin to an orange juice. Now that’s a powerhouse of a juice!

Proper maintenance is essential to a healthy and beautiful garden. Neglected gardens offer suffer from over crowding, countless weeds, poor soil quality and weak plants. Here are seven tips on keeping a well maintained garden.

Deadheading Flowers: This is the practice of snipping off the dead and spent flowers on perennials and annuals. Removing dead flower heads will encourage repeat blooming, particularly with annuals. It also keeps the garden looking fresh all season long. Many perennials such as peony and iris, and all annuals benefit from having spent blooms removed.

Pinching Back: Certain plants, especially foliage plants like Coleus, respond with a spurt of new growth when their tops are pinched back. Pinching back promotes healthy growth and encourages more numerous blooms. Some plants become too leggy or top heavy unless they are pinched back.

Proper Fertilizing: Over fertilization can burn your plants. Fertilizing correctly encourages healthy growth in your flowers and other garden plants. If you water your yard frequently, fertilizing more regularly may be necessary because nutrients can leach out of the soil. An occasional application of liquid fertilizer is sometimes more beneficial than granules as it is more easily absorbed by the leaves. Container plants will be considerably healthier with a half-strength solution of liquid fertilizer applied regularly.

Diligent Weeding: This is one of the best ways to preserve the beauty of your garden. Remember, weeds compete with your plants for both nutrients and moisture. They also tend to crowd out other flowers and may limit air flow in the garden resulting in rot.

Proper Watering: Give your garden a thorough soaking a few times a week rather a quick dousing. This will ensure there is no run-off to cause erosion. Deep watering also encourages the growth of deeper roots which will help your garden plants withstand long dry spells.

Avoid Pesticides: Chemicals are dangerous to humans and often kill the natural predators of the pest in your garden, so avoid them if possible. There are many organic alternatives that effectively control pests.

Remembering these simple tips will keep your garden healthy and vibrant throughout the entire season and from year to year.
